Reassuring Tidbits

** “Learn to smile at every situation. See it as an opportunity to prove your strength and ability.”– Joe Brown
** Take the “Laugh Challenge.”
** Constancy in Prayer – Don’t stop praying. Pray until you get an answer; until you get a release or until something happens.

*** Tidbit 1  Humor Time
A young man took a shortcut home one night. He went through a cemetery. He fell into an open grave. He tried to get out but couldn’t. He yelled and screamed but it was to no avail. There was no one around to hear him. He finally came to the conclusion that he needed to wait until the morning so he settled in for the night. He went to sleep.

Later that evening another person was taking a shortcut through the cemetery. He too fell in the open grave. He started to claw and scratch. He shouted as loud as he could but it was to no avail. Suddenly the first man who had fallen into the grave woke up and in the darkness tapped the man who was scratching and clawing and said, “You can’t get out of here.” You know what? He did! –Author Unknown
Take away: You never know what you are capable of doing until you’re in a crisis.

Out of the mouth of babes.

*** Tidbit 2  The Laugh Challenge
I love to laugh. I love how it makes me feel. God blessed us with the gift of laughter. Laughter makes your heart merry and the Bible tells us in Proverbs 17:22, “A merry heart does good like a medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.” Science also confirms it. I’ve heard that laughter can be compared to internal jogging. Laughter increases blood flow, helps relieve stress, and boosts the immune system. It may help reduce pain and reduce calories. It also increases the feel-good hormones (dopamine, endorphins).

Have you laughed today? Did you laugh yesterday? Laughter is so good for your health and it’s a decision that only you can make. One of my goals for the month of February is to laugh more. Four days a week I will laugh intentionally for a minimum of 5 minutes (of course I will go over 5 minutes once I get started). It’s like eating potato chips, once you get started – it’s hard to stop.

Your body doesn’t know the difference between sincere and fake laughter; You will still reap the wonderful benefits. Don’t wait until you feel like it. Begin to think of something funny. Begin to think of how God has given Christians victory in and through all things. Won’t you join me and take the challenge? I promise, you won’t regret it.

*** Nugget 3  Constancy in Prayer
Psalm 77:1-15
1 I cry aloud to God, aloud to God, that he may hear me. 2 In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord; in the night my hand is stretched out without wearying; my soul refuses to be comforted. 3 I think of God, and I moan; I meditate, and my spirit faints. Selah

4 You keep my eyelids from closing; I am so troubled that I cannot speak. 5 I consider the days of old and remember the years of long ago. 6 I commune with my heart in the night; I meditate and search my spirit: 7 “Will the Lord spurn forever and never again be favorable? 8 Has his steadfast love ceased forever? Are his promises at an end for all time? 9 Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he in anger shut up his compassion?” Selah

10 And I say, “It is my grief that the right hand of the Most High has changed.”11 I will call to mind the deeds of the Lord; I will remember your wonders of old. 12 I will meditate on all your work and muse on your mighty deeds. 13 Your way, O God, is holy. What god is so great as our God? 14 You are the God who works wonders; you have displayed your might among the peoples. 15 With your strong arm you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph. Selah

Asaph, the author of Psalm 77 was troubled and disheartened. He reached out to God in prayer. He believed that God heard him but God did not respond. Although he felt like God had rejected him, he kept reaching out to Him. He remembered the faithfulness and goodness of God. He remembered how God had brought Israel out of Egypt and the wonders He performed in the past. He still wasn’t comforted, but he did not stop praying.

When COVID came our way, I bought a ukulele. I practiced that ukulele daily. As restrictions lifted, I stopped showing constancy in practicing. I don’t remember the last time I picked it up. Our purpose this week is to encourage constancy in prayer. Like Asaph, there will be times when we have trouble and allow ourselves to become overwhelmed with sadness, grief or life. What do we do when prayer does not help or when we feel like God is not there? What do we do when we remember God’s faithfulness but it does not seem to help? We keep praying even if we feel faithless. We pray until we get an answer; until we get a release or until something happens. We hold on to what is true about God even if we cannot see or feel it. God is faithful to His children; He always has been and will always be.

Worthwhile Nuggets

** Have you smiled today? Have you laughed today?
** You can grow sprouts any place, in any climate and any time of the year. You don’t need soil, sunshine or fertilizer.
** We should seek to honor God in all our ways, actions, and thoughts.

*** Nugget 1  Humor Time

What is the funniest experience you have ever had in church?
Pastor Dan had reached the end of his heart-stirring message which led to an invitation. He was reminding us of God’s great sacrifice and love. His next words, “And the Lord says…” were followed by (very loudly from my pew) “BLAH, BLAH, BLAH!” (….the ring tone on my phone)! (SLD)

My son’s name is Samuel. My brother was a reader that day. The reading: Samuel, Samuel, where are you? By the time he read those lines again, my son yelled out, Uncle Mark, I’M RIGHT HERE!
Small church, everyone knows everyone, that was it. Everyone burst out laughing. (ML)

If Jesus was from Alabama
A little girl from Alabama went to church for the first time ever when she was visiting her grandparents in Michigan. When the pastor announced it was time for the Lord’s Supper, she was excited–and hungry. The congregation filed up to the altar rail, and the child watched in confusion as her grandparents received a wafer and small plastic cup of wine. She could hardly wait to get back to the pew to tell her grandma that Jesus wasn’t from Alabama.

“How do you know that, dear?” asked her grandma.

“Because that was the poorest meal I’ve ever seen,” she said. “Mama would’ve at least given everybody some corn bread and sweet tea.”

*** Nugget 2  Sprouts (continued)

I shared in September’s post that I was on a new adventure: sprouting. I am enjoying this adventure. I love seeing the sprouts start off as tiny seeds and grow into what you see in the picture below: Salad Mix sprouts. Aren’t they just beautiful?

So far, I have sprouted: Salad Mix (Alfalfa, Radish, Broccoli, & Clover), Kale Trio (Blue Curled Scotch, Premier & Red Russian Kale), Mung Bean, and Red Clover. Alfalfa, Clover & Mung Bean are complete sources of protein. I add sprouts to my daily blended salad. I don’t eat a lot of cooked vegetables. I don’t eat a lot of salads, but I will throw all kinds of veggies into my Vitamix blender. I add water, sometimes with some veggie powder, sometimes with some type of veggie juice. I blend it into a liquid or a semi-liquid. It’s fast & simple and cuts down on my chewing time.

You can grow sprouts any place, in any climate and any time of the year. You don’t need soil, sunshine or fertilizer. They’re easy to digest. They’re jam packed with vitamins and nutrients. I get tired of consuming the same vegetables day after day. Sprouts bring some variety.

Keep in mind that there is a risk of contamination when adding sprouts to your meals. Most sprout seeds are grown in warm, humid conditions which may cause bacterial growth. There are some things you can do to avoid the risk of food poisoning.

  • Never buy or eat slimy or smelly sprouts.
  • Keep sprouts chilled below 48 degrees at all times.
  • Take extreme caution with sanitization if attempting to make sprouts at home.
  • Rinse sprouts before consumption.
  • Always wash your hands before handling sprouts.

I encourage you to conduct your own research & to consult with your health care provider about any changes you plan to make.

*** Nugget 3  Honor God

1 Corinthians 6:12-20
All things are permitted for me,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are permitted for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. 13 “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food,” and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is meant not for sexual immorality but for the Lord and the Lord for the body. 14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that whoever is united to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For it is said, “The two shall be one flesh.” 17 But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. 18 Shun sexual immorality! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against the body itself. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.

I can max out my credit cards by shopping till I drop. I’m free to eat what I want, how much I want, whenever I want. I don’t have to exercise another day in my life. I can curse like a sailor. I am free to have sex with a married man or a single man. Although I am free to do these things, they are not beneficial to me. These actions do not glorify God. What I start to do freely can quickly become my master.

The Corinthians thought they could freely live their lives on their own terms. In our Gospel passage today, Paul corrected their view of sexual relationships. He explained that just as a married man and woman become one flesh, on a spiritual level, anyone united to the Lord becomes one flesh with Him. Our every action (especially sexual immorality) will affect that bond.

We should seek to honor God in all our ways, actions, and thoughts. Christ did not set us free so that we could do whatever we want. He set us free so that we could have an eternal relationship with Him. He set us free so that we could fulfill our destinies. He set us free because He loved us.

Part of honoring Him is to ask ourselves some practical questions when we have to make a decision:

  • What is the wisest thing for me to do?
  • What will happen if I choose to do this or not?
  • Will this draw me or others closer to Jesus?
  • Will doing this represent Jesus well?
  • Is it necessary or helpful?
  • Will my decision please God?

The more we spend time with God, the more we begin to think like He does. The more we ask for wisdom, the easier it becomes to make decisions.

Lighthearted Nuggets

** “Everyone smiles in the same language.” – George Carlin
** Got beets? Beets and beet greens are packed with essential vitamins, life-giving minerals and plant compounds, some of which have medicinal properties.
** Waiting for justice? Hold fast to your faith and learn how to wait on God.

*** Nugget 1  Humor Time

  • You come from dust and you will return to dust. That’s why I don’t dust. It could be someone I know.
  • Give Satan an inch and he’ll be a ruler.
  • Read the Bible – It will scare the hell out of you.

What is the funniest experience you have ever had in church?

  • Realizing my toddler had ditched her undies and was currently mooning the people in the pews behind us.
  • Having my thigh high stockings, (they were too big, I had lost weight) fall down to my ankles.
  • A sign outside a church read: This week’s sermon, “What is Hell?” Underneath that; “Come along to choir practice and find out”.

Politically correct ways to say someone is unintelligent:
  • The cheese slid off his cracker.
  • He fell out of the Stupid tree and hit every branch on the way down.
  • Her sewing machine’s out of thread.

*** Nugget 2  Beets

Beetroots, commonly known as beets, have never been one of my favorite vegetables.  In the past I would juice them, but never eat them.  Do you eat beets?  If your answer is yes, then you’ll love the information that I’m about to share with you.  If your answer is no, then hopefully you will learn some things about beets and will begin to include them in your diet.

Beets and beet greens are packed with essential vitamins, minerals and plant compounds, some of which have medicinal properties. They are loaded with life-giving minerals, including magnesium (which has lots of benefits, including Alzheimer’s prevention), potassium (which aids heart, kidneys, muscle, nerve, and digestive functions), copper, iron, and phosphorus, an essential mineral aiding cell function throughout the body – and they’re good for bones and teeth, too.

Beets are also a great source of Vitamins A, B, and C, as well as healthy fiber.  They are also low in calories and fat.  They contain manganese (which is good for your bones, liver, kidneys, and pancreas) and B vitamin folate, which helps reduce the risk of birth defects.

Beets may help:
1.  Keep blood pressure in check
2. Fight inflammation
3. Support brain health
4. Improve digestive health
5. Help fight cancer
6. Boost your stamina

There are many ways to enjoy beets AND the green leafy tops. They can be juiced. They can be added to smoothies. They can be sautéed lightly just like other greens such as spinach and kale. They can be grated raw and added to salads. They can be marinated with lemon juice, herbs, and olive oil.

If you buy beets already cooked, make sure you consider the sodium and the sugar content as well. Although beets have the highest sugar content of all vegetables, most people can safely eat them a few times a week.  The beet greens can be eaten in unlimited quantities.

Why not include beets in your Do Better Challenge.  I hope you’re still trying to do better.  Go online, find and experiment with some recipes and enjoy.  I’m sure your body will say, “Thank you!”

*** Nugget 3  Justice Delayed

Revelation 6:9 –11, NRSV
When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slaughtered for the word of God and for the testimony they had given; 10 they cried out with a loud voice, “Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long will it be before you judge and avenge our blood on the inhabitants of the earth?” 11 They were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number would be complete both of their fellow servants and of their brothers and sisters, who were soon to be killed as they themselves had been killed.

John, writer of the book of Revelation tells us things that are going to take place after the church leaves the earth. The seals in chapter 6 represent the beginning of Christ’s judgment of unbelievers on the earth during the Tribulation period. The fifth seal presents the saints (Tribulation saints) that were killed because they believed in the word of God and confessed the truth of it. They held fast to their profession of faith and as a result they were murdered.

John saw these martyrs crying out to God for vengeance. They were told to sit back in their white robes of victory and honor, and wait. Justice was delayed but it would not be denied. They had no impatience, no uneasiness, and no doubts.

Learn how to wait on God. It may seem like He has forgotten. It may seem like there will be no justice, but hold on. You don’t have to get stressed out. Negative stress can lead to all sorts of health problems. Don’t take matters into your own hands.

God will set it right when His people are persecuted. While you’re trying to figure it out, He’s already worked it out. He will judge His enemies and yours. Sit back, and give Him praise and glory while you wait.

Hallelujah to the King of kings & Lord of lords!

*** Nugget 1  Humor Time

In Sunday school, after a lesson on Jesus’ many miracles, the teacher asked, “Is there anything God can’t do?”

There sure is, Miss James, one student said, “No matter what He does, He can’t please everybody.”

An 85-year old widow went on a blind date with a 90-year old man. When she returned to her daughter’s house later that night, she seemed upset. “What happened, Mother?” the daughter asked,
“I had to slap his face three times!”
  “You mean he got fresh?”
“No,” she answered, “I thought he was dead!”

My mother taught me:

  • WISDOM – “When you get to be my age, you’ll understand.”
  • About JUSTICE – “One day you’ll have kids, and I hope they turn out just like you.”
  • About TIME TRAVEL – “If you don’t straighten up, I’m going to knock you into the middle of next week!”

*** Nugget 2  Get Ready, Get Set, (May 1st), GO
May is National Walking. Walking is an easy way to improve your health. It gets your heart pumping & keeps you active. It may reduce a number of preventable health conditions. This includes certain cancers, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. It provides physical as well as mental benefits. It increases blood flow to the brain, which in turn improves mood. It can help burn fat and keep us fit. The best thing is that it’s fun and it’s free!

Why not challenge your friends, neighbors, church members, family members, and/or co-workers to set a walking goal for the month of May? Start where you are comfortable and gradually increase. Remember that a goal has to be measurable. Don’t just say, “I’ll walk every day.” Will you count steps, count miles, or walk a specific number of minutes? Will you walk every day, every other day, or three days a week? If you need more help getting started, check out:  https://www.livingstreets.org.uk/workplaces/try20-tips. There you will find a #Try20 checklist (20 tips to help you fit in walking) during National Walking Month. Get Ready, Get Set, (May 1st), GO! Happy Walking!

*** Nugget 3  Grow Baby, Grow
1 Corinthians 3:1-3
And so, brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people but rather as fleshly, as infants in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for solid food. Even now you are still not ready, 3 for you are still fleshly. For as long as there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not fleshly and behaving according to human inclinations?

Has someone said these words to you at some point of your life? “You haven’t changed a bit; you’re still crazy, pretty, funny, handsome, etc.” “You haven’t changed a bit; you look just like you did in high school, college, etc.” The compliments probably brought a smile to your face, whether they were true or not.

Paul had to address the Corinthians on the lowest possible spiritual level.  They had not changed one bit since his last visit. Just as natural babies grow up to be men & women, spiritual babies are expected to do the same. They were divided among themselves. They quarreled about religion. They aligned themselves with personalities, resulting in competition, jealousy, envy and strife in the church. They acted like unsaved and untransformed people.

As a child, I couldn’t wait to grow up. I couldn’t wait to go from elementary school to middle school, to high school. I couldn’t wait to get my driver’s license, to graduate from college, to get my first apartment, to be able to make my own decisions. Then, time seemed to move too slowly.  Now, it seems to move too fast.

It’s wonderful that we are Christians, but we are expected to grow spiritually.  God calls us to work on maturing so that we can effectively accomplish His purpose and plan for our lives. He expects us to continue to grow until He calls us home. May spiritually, it never be said of us, “He or she hasn’t changed a bit.”

Daddy God, give us a desire to grow spiritually. Help us to want it more than anything: a house, a car, a spouse, that vacation, that promotion, etc. We praise you for doing it. In the matchless, mighty name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

The Marriage of Miss Bad Breath and Mr. Smelly Feet

A young couple, madly in love, decided to get married. But as the wedding day neared, both grew increasingly nervous over secret problems they had never shared with anyone. Privately, the groom-to-be approached his minister. “I’m really concerned about this marriage,” the young man said. “Don’t you love her?” the pastor asked in surprise. “Of course,” the groom said. “But I have unbelievably smelly feet—and I’m afraid my fiancée won’t be able to stand them.” “Oh, is that all?” the pastor replied. “Look, all you need to do is wash your feet twice a day and wear socks all the time.” The groom thought it over and decided it just might work.

Meanwhile, the nervous bride had privately approached the minister’s wife. “I’m so worried,” she sobbed. “I have really bad breath when I wake up each day!” “Oh, dear,” the pastor’s wife replied,” everyone has bad breath in the morning. Don’t worry about it.” “No, you don’t understand,” the bride implored. “My morning breath is so awful; my fiancé won’t even want to be near me!” “Well, I have an idea,” the pastor’s wife said soothingly.

“Set your alarm just a few minutes before your husband wakes up. Run to the bathroom, brush your teeth, and gargle with mouthwash before he gets out of bed. The key is not to say anything until you’ve taken care of your breath.” The bride thought it over and decided it just might work. In time, a beautiful wedding was held, and the bride and groom enjoyed the day without once worrying about their secret problems.

For several months they managed to keep their issues to themselves. Then one morning, the husband awoke before dawn to find that one of his socks had come off in the night. Frantic, he searched the bed, afraid of what might happen if he didn’t find his sock soon.

His bride woke with a start, and, without thinking, blurted out, “What in the world are you doing?” “Oh, dear!” the young man wailed. “You swallowed my sock!”

*** Nugget 2 What about the Children?

Do you try to live a healthy lifestyle without including your children?  You can help your children lower their risk of future heart attacks, strokes, weight gain, diabetes, etc. by instilling healthy living habits in them while they are young. Proverbs 22:26 tells us to, “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not turn from it.” This is not related to Christian teachings alone; it’s also applicable for living a healthy lifestyle.

Eating habits develop at an early age. It’s better to build strong children than to repair adults. If children grow up in a family where lots of fried food, candy, fast food, junk food is eaten, no physical activity is encouraged, they could have a hard time changing later in life.  Begin teaching your children and grandchildren now so that they will have the information in them. If they turn from it when they grow older, at least you will have done your part.

It may involve extra work for you as a parent to help your child develop healthy living habits, but it will be well worth it. Here are some tips:

  • Be the example. Children learn by example more than anything else. Children, especially young ones want to try what mom and dad are trying.
  • Make exercise a family event.
  • Experiment with many different fruits and veggies. Each season brings great varieties.
  • Be consistent and don’t complain. Make everything as fun & as interesting as possible.
  • Don’t buy and cook special food for your children. The whole family should eat the same well-balanced meal. Cook with them.
  • Provide educational material (books, videos) on their level. Let this be a family project.

Future generations can be greatly impacted if we commit to teaching our children healthy living principles.  Parents have a responsibility to supply their children whatever will best ensure their health and vitality. Even if you have teenagers or young adults in your house, it’s never too late to begin. There is no time like the presence.

*** Nugget 3  Treasures Reveal the Heart’s Desire

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.  –Matthew 6:19-21

We invest a lot of time and energy on earthly things. Years ago, I wanted a very expensive piece of jewelry. Every time I saw it in a commercial or in a magazine, I just knew I had to have it. I did some planning and eventually purchased one, as a Christmas gift to myself. I also had it insured. Of course, there have been other things that I felt I just had to have. I didn’t stop until I got them. As long as I live, I’m sure there will be other things that I will just have to have.

Earthly treasures will pass away. They can be eaten by moths, corroded by rust, or stolen by a burglar.  Jesus is asking us to concentrate on heavenly treasures (spiritual things). He’s not condemning wealth. He wants to bless us with things while we’re on earth, but He doesn’t want us to lust after them and make them our gods.

Heavenly treasures are a far better investment. They’re eternal and imperishable. Our love for Jesus should motivate us to invest in these treasures. There are many ways Christians can invest including:

  • Loving our enemies
  • Sharing the gospel
  • Serving the lord and his people
  • Giving (your time, money, attention, encouragement, a smile, a true compliment, etc.)
  • Faithfully enduring persecution

We can shift our focus from earthly things to spiritual things by simply making a decision. Let us decide to store our treasures where we want our hearts to be. Our hearts will follow our treasures. These treasures will never pass away.

Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior?  If you wait, it could be too late. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting live (John 3:16).

If you have already accepted Him, He wants you to get to know Him even better.

*** Tidbit 2
Dear 2022, Thanks for all the lessons.
Dear 2023, I’m ready………………..

Now is the time to prepare your mind to say goodbye to some 2022 bad habits. We all have them, and it is possible to say goodbye to them forever. Change isn’t always fast nor is it always easy, but it can be done with time and effort. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. The secret to your success is found in your daily routine. Motivation is what gets you started. Habit keeps you going.

  • Choose the habit(s) you’re leaving behind and start planning.
  • Focus on one or two goals at a time.
  • Set a specific start day.
  • Your goal has to be measureable: what, when, how often, how much.
  • Give yourself 30 days to break the habit.
  • Keep a journal and/or use a chart to monitor your progress.
  • Reward yourself: get a massage, buy a new book, a pair of socks, and/or go see a movie.
  • Get a support system. We tend to do better when we have to be accountable to someone. It’s always good to have someone to check on your progress and encourage you.

What bad habit(s) do you want to leave behind in 2022?
– eating late at night
– eating too much
– not drinking enough water
– not getting enough sleep
– not spending enough time with the Lord
– not reading your Bible
– not going to church
The list goes on and on. If you fall or jump off the wagon, get up, dust yourself off and get back on. Don’t beat yourself up. See what you can learn from the setback. Remember that God is there to help you. He wants to help you.

*Tidbit 3 A Royal Beauty Contest

Esther 2:1-4, NRSV
After these things, when the anger of King Ahasuerus had abated, he remembered Vashti and what she had done and what had been decreed against her. 2 Then the king’s servants who attended him said, “Let beautiful young virgins be sought out for the king. 3 And let the king appoint commissioners in all the provinces of his kingdom to gather all the beautiful young virgins to the harem in the citadel of Susa under custody of Hegai, the king’s eunuch, who is in charge of the women; let their cosmetic treatments be given them. 4 And let the young woman who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti.” This pleased the king, and he did so.

On the final day of a banquet that King Ahasuerus held, he decided to show off his beautiful queen, Vashti. He sent for her. She refused to come. As a result, she was forever banished from the king’s presence. Chapter 2 opens with the king remembering Vashti. His anger had subsided, and he probably wanted to restore the relationship, but the law of the Persians and the Medes could not be revoked. His attendants suggested a royal beauty contest. Esther won the contest and became the new queen.

None of these events appeared to have anything to do with the people of God, but He was behind the scenes working. He effectively orchestrated the salvation of the Jews by placing Esther (a Jew), in that position. She was in His plans and she didn’t even know it at that time. She was given favor. We see in the other chapters how He gave her the wisdom and boldness that she needed to carry out God’s plan.

God may sometimes feel absent in your life. It may seem like He has forgotten about you.  You may even wonder if He still cares about what you’re going through. Good news! He is always at work in your life, just like He was at work in the book of Esther.

Stir up your faith and trust Him. He has a plan and a purpose for you. He’ll orchestrate events in your life. He’ll give you favor. He’ll cause you to be happy in a time of sorrow. He’ll give you peace in the midst of strife. He loves you so much that if He has to, He’ll stage a royal beauty contest and cause you to be the winner.

Oh, how wonderful, oh how marvelous is the Savior’s love for us!

Little Angel!
Little Johnny’s new baby brother was screaming up a storm.
Johnny asked his mom, “Where’d he come from?”
“He came from heaven, Johnny.”
Johnny responded: “Wow! I can see why they threw him out!”

Rest In Peace
One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex staring up at the large plaque that hung in the foyer of the church. The plaque was covered with names, and small American flags were mounted on either side of it. The seven year-old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside him and said quietly, “Good morning, Alex.”

Good morning, Pastor,” replied the young man, still focused on the plaque. “Pastor McGhee, what is this?” Alex asked.

“Well, son, it’s a memorial to all the men and women who have died in the service.”

Soberly, they stood together, staring at the large plaque. Little Alex’s voice was barely audible when he finally managed to ask, “Which one, the 9:00 or 10:30 service?”

*** Tidbit 2   Your Choice: Child or Slave

John 8:34-38, NRSV
Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36 So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are descendants of Abraham, yet you look for an opportunity to kill me because there is no place in you for my word. 38 I declare what I have seen in the Father’s presence; as for you, you should do what you have heard from the Father.”

The Jews firmly believed they couldn’t be enslaved to sin because they had the Law. They believed that only the Gentiles were enslaved to sin. After all, the Jews were the children of Abraham and did not need to be freed.  Jesus explained that yes, they were Abraham’s physical seed, but he was not their spiritual father. Jesus let them know that everyone who habitually practiced sin was a slave to sin.

There were times I enjoyed being a slave. I thank God for a mother and father who made sure that I learned about God. Someone said, “I had a drug problem growing up. My mother drug me to church. She drug me to Sunday School, Sunday Morning Service, Wednesday night Bible Study, Choir rehearsal, revivals, etc.” I thank God for that drug problem. Because of that drug problem I couldn’t enjoy being a slave for long. The Word had been planted in me.

God saw my heart. He knew that deep down inside, I didn’t want to be a slave to sin. He offered me freedom through His Son, Jesus. I accepted His invitation. He adopted me as His child. Now I am a member of His family, forever. I still sin, but I don’t habitually practice sin. When I sin, I repent. I don’t allow myself to be eaten up by guilt because I have been forgiven.

The living Word (Jesus) and the written Word (Scripture) keep me in check. I heard someone say, “Check yourself before you wreck yourself.” Every day I check myself. Every day I’m thankful to be a child of God.

*** Tidbit 3 Got Hummus?

Hummus is a popular Middle Eastern dip and spread. It is a plant-based protein, packed with vitamins and minerals. It is usually made by blending chickpeas (garbanzo beans), tahini (ground sesame seeds), olive oil, lemon juice and garlic in a food processor.

It can also be purchased in the store. Just make sure you read the label carefully. Buy it with as few ingredients as possible. Look for mostly whole food ingredients with names you recognize on the label. Research has shown that hummus may help:

  • Fight inflammation
  • Improve blood sugar control
  • Aid in weight loss
  • Lower heart disease risk
  • Improve digestive health
  • Prevent cancer
  • Keep you regular

Different ways to add hummus into your diet include:

  • Use it in a sandwich, substitute for mayonnaise.
  • Make hummus toast.
  • Use it as a salad dressing alone or (Use less salad dressing and add hummus).
  • Use it as a marinade. (Let your fish or chicken marinate for an hour then bake as you normally would.)
  • Experiment with different vegetables.(cauliflower, cucumbers, celery, sliced peppers, broccoli florets, snap peas, etc.)

Here’s a simple recipe for hummus. It can be made in less than 10 minutes and only requires a food processor.
Ingredients
2 cups of canned chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained
1/3 cup of tahini
1/4 cup of lemon juice
1 tablespoon of olive oil
2 garlic cloves, crushed
A pinch of salt

*** Tidbit 2  Jesus loves you and me.

Parents love their kids, at least they’re supposed to. No matter what kind of adult that child turns out to be, a parent will still love him or her. Jesus loves us. There is absolutely nothing you or I can do to stop Him from loving us. He doesn’t love sin, but He loves the sinner. He wants to have a personal relationship with each of us. His desire is that we spend eternity with Him.

Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior?  If you wait, it could be too late. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting live (John 3:16).

No matter how bad life gets, I have the promise that Jesus loves me, and all things are working together for my good. If you’re a born-again believer, you can say the same thing.

*** Tidbit 3   Flatulence

No matter what name you give it (passing gas, farting, breaking wind, cut the cheese or pooting) we all do it. It’s a natural product of digestion. Flatulence means that you have excessive gas in the stomach or intestine. As you digest food, your digestive system will cause intestinal gas, otherwise known as flatus.

Flatulence can result from being sedentary, swallowing air while chewing or having trouble digesting carbohydrates. There are certain foods in particular that cause gas, such as beans, high-fiber fruits and vegetables, protein shakes, sauerkraut, lentils, artificial sweeteners, and carbonated beverages. When the digestive system isn’t able to fully digest food, it will turn it into gas to escape the body.

Here are 6 tips that may help relieve flatulence and let you continue eating foods that are also good for you.

  1. Soak beans in water for at least twelve hours. Cooking them will help reduce their gas-producing properties.  Throw away the water that you soaked them in. Rinse them thoroughly and cook them thoroughly until they are completely tender.
  2. Nutritional seeds: flax, chia and/or fennel seeds. Be aware that flax seeds can cause constipation if you don’t drink enough water.
  3. Digestive Enzyme supplements help break down the food in your digestive tract especially foods that are hard to break down such as foods that high in fiber or fats.
  4. Ginger added to your dinner or smoothies may help reduce the amount of gas that is produced in your stomach.
  5. Baking soda and lemon may be fast and instant. Squeeze one lemon into a glass of water and then add a teaspoon of baking soda. Mix well and drink once the fizz has died down.
  6. Apple cider vinegar is a natural remedy for bloating, but it may also help stop gas fast. Add a teaspoon of ACV to a cup of hot boiling water and drink it slowly.

— A Jewish Proverb

A Pastor’s Power

A pastor was in the middle of his sermon when he noticed a man had fallen asleep with his head on his wife’s shoulder.

“Wake up your husband,” Pastor Riley snapped.

The wife smiled and replied, “You put him to sleep. You wake him up.”

Things My Mother Taught Me (part 4)

1. My mother taught me about RECEIVING.
“You are going to get it when you get home!”

2. My mother taught me MEDICAL SCIENCE.
“If you don’t stop crossing your eyes, they are going to freeze that way.”

3. My mother taught me ESP.
“Put your sweater on; don’t you think I know when you are cold?”

4. My mother taught me HUMOUR.
“When that lawn mower cuts off your toes, don’t come running to me.”

Say what
After 50 years of marriage the couple was sitting at the dinner table and the wife said to her husband: “After all these years of marriage I know that you are Tried and True.”
He replied, “What did you say?”
She said in a louder voice: “After all these years of marriage I have learned that you are Tried and True.”
He said: “Speak louder!”
She said in a louder voice: “After all these years of marriage I have learned that you are Tried and True.”
He replied loudly: “Well, I’m tired of you too!!”

*** Tidbit 2  Summer Fruits & Vegetables

A growing body of research shows that fruits and vegetables are critical to promoting good health. Although most produce is available year-round it’s better to buy when it’s in season. Produce out of season is usually more expensive and sometimes doesn’t taste as good. When you buy produce in season you’re getting maximum freshness, flavor, and nutritional content.  It will more likely be available at the lowest possible price.

You can buy seasonal produce and preserve it by freezing, canning, and dehydrating it for later. Health experts recommend that we fill half our plates with fruits and vegetables. I like to include more vegetables than fruit because of the high sugar content in most fruit. I suggest lightly steaming vegetables, eating them raw, or making a blended salad (blending them in a blender) to preserve the nutrients.

Summer will be over before you know it so go ahead and enjoy these seasonal fruits and vegetables while you can. Each step you take toward consuming more fruits and vegetables helps you be at your best!

*** Tidbit 3  Hope During a Time of Despair

Joel 2:23-26, NRSV

23 O children of Zion, be glad and rejoice in the Lord your God; for he has given the early rain for your vindication, he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early and the later rain, as before. 24 The threshing floors shall be full of grain, the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. 25 I will repay you for the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent against you. 26 You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame.

The prophet Joel wrote to the people of Judah during a difficult time in their history. An invasion of locusts had destroyed fields of grain, vineyards, livestock, gardens and trees. There was a severe famine throughout the land. People were feeling hopeless and depressed. They were in this predicament because of sin. They were in despair but there was hope. Joel urged them to return to the Lord, to fast, to repent, and to call on the Lord to deliver them. He assured them that if they would repent, they would, once again receive the blessings of God. God would restore to them whatever they had lost. That was a promise.

God desires that we run to Him and not from Him when we’ve sinned. That’s the key to having an abundant life. He’s such a good God! When we turn to Him in genuine repentance, not only will He forgive us – He can compensate us for lost time.

God can redeem negative situations. He can remove barriers and restore broken relationships. This song comes to my mind, “I’m Glad I Don’t Look Like What I’ve Been Through.” We don’t have to look like what we’ve been through. That’s the kind of God we serve. He’s a restorer. Oh, how He loves you and me! There is hope!

A woman goes to the Doctor, worried about her husband’s temper.

The Doctor asks: “What’s the problem?”

The woman says: “Doctor, I don’t know what to do. Every day my husband seems to lose his temper for no reason. It scares me.”

The Doctor says: “I have a cure for that. When it seems that your husband is getting angry, just take a glass of water and start swishing it in your mouth. Just swish and swish but don’t swallow it until he either leaves the room or calms down.”

Two weeks later the woman comes back to the doctor looking fresh and reborn.

The woman says: “Doctor that was a brilliant idea! Every time my husband started losing it, I swished with water. I swished and swished, and he calmed right down! How does a glass of water do that?” The Doctor says: “The water itself does nothing. It’s keeping your mouth shut that does the trick.”

*** Tidbit  2   Can’t Turn Back

Ever felt like turning back, giving up, throwing in the towel? We all have at some point in our lives. Life can be difficult. We experience hurts, disappointments, setbacks, problems, negative situations, etc. We may become tired, lazy, and/or impatient.

We may ask the question, “Why me?”  We may get to the point where we feel we just cannot take another step forward and turning back seems easier. Turning back may seem to be the only option. It’s during these times that we can’t turn back. It’s during these times that we must run to God, not from Him.

We may even begin to wonder where God is during these times. If you’re a born-again believer, you don’t have to wonder where He is. He’s in you: (John 14:23). He’s with you: Emmanuel (God is with us.). He sees you: El Roi (The God who sees me). He loves you so much. He will never leave you nor forsake you.

Don’t turn back. Don’t turn back on your dreams, your goals, your walk with God. Don’t turn back on your healthy living quest. Keep going. Keep trying. Keep believing. Keep trusting God. Know that everything is working out for your good (Romans 8:28).

*** Tidbit  3   Benefits of Garlic

Garlic is often used to flavor numerous meals. It is also used as a home remedy. Here are 7 amazing ways that you may benefit from adding garlic to your diet.

Garlic may:

  • Reduce the risk of diseases such as cancer.
  • Improve digestive health.
  • Help fight a broad spectrum of viruses, bacteria, and fungi due to its antibiotic properties.
  • Help prevent diabetes by reducing the blood glucose levels of the body.
  • Help prevent or treat coughs and colds.
  • Help reduce several risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
  • Help improve eye health due to its anti-microbial properties.

Garlic is available in several forms including, garlic powder, garlic capsules, minced garlic, & fresh garlic. Have you tried garlic water? It’s easy to make.

When preparing it, remember to:
—  Use raw, fresh garlic.
—  Peel the skin of the clove before you add it to the water. Only peel the cloves that you are using. Store the rest for later.
—  Boil until the clove soften and is easy to pierce using a fork.

Here is a garlic water recipe.

1.   Add two or three fresh cloves to your cup of water.
2.   Bring the mixture to a boil.
3.   Turn off the heat when it boils.
4.   Let it cool and serve it in a glass container.

You can add some lemon juice, parsley, or honey for more flavor. The servings will vary depending on the number of cups you are using.

My garlic water recipe.
I like to take a few peeled, raw, garlic cloves and put them in a mason jar. I let them marinate in the fridge and drink a cup for 3 to 4 days. I don’t add anything else to it.

You may experience bad breath because the bulb causes a strong stench. Be aware that your sweat and pee may also smell of garlic. Citrus fruits like oranges or milk may help. Drink garlic water in moderation; don’t overdo it with the cloves. If you’re in doubt, maybe stick with 1 clove per day.

The information that I share is for information only. Conduct your own research. Consult your doctor or healthcare provider about every change you make in your diet, especially if you are on medication or have an underlying health condition.

Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior?  If not, what are you waiting on? In crazy times like these, we need a Savior. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.”   ~John 3:16

If you have already accepted Him, He wants you to get to know Him even better.

Thanks for stopping by.  Hope you were blessed.
